South African athletics had a stellar performance at the World Relay Championships in Guangzhou, China, winning three medals, including two golds. The men's teams excelled, with the 4x100m team consisting of Bayanda Walaza, Sinesipho Dambile, Bradley Nkoana, and Akani Simbine claiming gold in a world-leading time of 37.61 seconds, narrowly edging out the United States. In the 4x400m, Gaerdeo Isaacs, Udeme Okon, Leendert Koekemoer, and Zakithi Nene also won gold, finishing in 2:57.50, marking the fastest time of the year.
The women’s team also impressed, securing a bronze in the 4x400m. The team of Shirley Nekhubui, Miranda Coetzee, Precious Melepo, and Zeney van der Walt broke the South African record twice, first in the heats with a time of 3:28.01 and then in the final with 3:24.84.
Despite their strong performance, they finished behind Spain and the United States. In the mixed 4x400m, Tumisang Shezi, Shirley Nekhubui, Leendert Koekemoer, and Zeney van der Walt finished second in their heat to qualify for the final, where Mthi Mthimkulu, Jada van Staden, Tumisang Shezi, and Hannah van Niekerk placed fifth.
These performances solidified South Africa's status as a force in global relay athletics. The country’s relay teams are now preparing for the World Track and Field Championships in Tokyo later this year, where they will look to continue their success on the international stage.
