South Africa's Track Stars Set for High-Stakes ASA Grand Prix Opener

Posted : 10 March 2025

South Africa's top track and field athletes will compete against some of Africa's finest at the opening leg of the ASA Grand Prix series, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger event, set to take place at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane on Wednesday.

A highly anticipated showdown is expected in the men's 100m sprint, where African record holder Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya will be the favorite. He will, however, face stiff competition from his compatriot Mark Odhiambo, as well as former South African 200m champion Luxolo Adams and veteran sprinter Emile Erasmus, who is eager to make an impact in his comeback season.

In the women's middle-distance races, Prudence Sekgodiso will make her first domestic appearance this year in the 1,500m event, following her impressive performance on the European indoor circuit, where she broke her own national short track 800m record.

Meanwhile, a fierce battle is expected in the women's 800m, as Charne Swart looks to build on her recent success after setting a personal best earlier this month. Swart's main rival will be Botswana's Oratile Nowe, who represented her country at the Olympic Games in Paris last year.

Other standout athletes in the competition include Zakithi Nene and Sinesipho Dambile, who will go head-to-head in the men's 400m, while Botswana’s Ketlhobogile Haingura and Tumo Nkape will contest the men's 800m. South African record holder Marione Fourie is the favorite in the women's 100m hurdles, while in the field events, former world champion Luvo Manyonga continues his return to the long jump.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jovan van Vuuren will also be in action, as will former Olympic finalist Kyle Blignaut in the shot put. Athletes competing in platinum events will vie for prize money, with winners earning R5,500, while promotional event champions will receive R1,500.
