South Africa’s Top Athletes Set for Fierce Showdown at ASA Senior Championships in Stellenbosch

Posted : 16 April 2026

South Africa’s leading track and field athletes are gearing up for a highly competitive three-day showdown as the ASA Senior Track & Field Championships begin at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch on Thursday. The event will feature some of the country’s biggest names across sprint, middle-distance, and field disciplines.

One of the main highlights will be the men’s 100m sprint, where defending champion Gift Leotlela of Athletics Gauteng North faces strong competition. He will line up against Benjamin Richardson and Bradley Nkoana, as well as 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk and several rising talents, making it one of the most anticipated races of the championships.

In the middle-distance events, national record holder Tshepo Tshite enters the 1 500m as the favourite but is expected to face a serious challenge from in-form athlete Luan Munnik. The 5 000m race also promises excitement, with Maxime Chaumeton aiming to defend his title after strong performances on the road circuit.

The 400m field features a mix of experienced and emerging athletes, including Lythe Pillay, Udeme Okon, and promising junior Leendert Koekemoer, all representing Central Gauteng Athletics.

On the women’s side, Prudence Sekgodiso stands out as a dominant force in both the 800m and 1 500m events, while Olympic silver medallist Jo-Ane du Plessis is widely expected to dominate the javelin competition. Marione Fourie will aim to retain her 100m hurdles title but faces competition from junior record holder Tumi Ramokgopa, while Colette Uys is the favourite in both the shot put and discus events.
