Simone Biles solidified her status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time by winning three gold medals and one silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, bringing her total Olympic medal count to an impressive 11. Despite her success, the 28-year-old gymnast is uncertain about her future participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Speaking after receiving the Sportswoman of the Year award at the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards, Biles admitted that she is "not sure" if she will compete again at the next Olympic Games.
Although Biles has proven herself time and time again, her decision to compete in Los Angeles is still up in the air. She has made it clear that her current focus is on recovery, both physically and mentally, following the intense physical toll the Olympics takes on an athlete’s body. "I’m still focusing on healing right now," she said, emphasizing the importance of taking time for herself.
Biles acknowledged that her decision will be impacted by the personal sacrifices she has made over the years, including time spent away from family, friends, and her husband. "I haven’t had that much time to just enjoy life," she added. As she enjoys her time off, she is weighing whether returning to the gym and committing to the rigorous training for another Olympic cycle is the right choice for her.
She went on to explain the commitment required to prepare for the Olympics, stating that it's not just a one-year effort but rather a four-year journey. Biles also noted that while the prospect of the Games being held in Los Angeles is exciting, she is unsure whether she wants to go through the rigorous process again. "It’s a big decision to make," she said, expressing her uncertainty about competing again.
Biles took a break from gymnastics after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she dealt with the "twisties," a mental block that hindered her performance. However, she made her return to the sport in 2023, continuing to perform at the highest level and further cementing her legacy. Her gold medal performances in Paris, coupled with her sportsmanship, proved that she remains at the top of her game.
One of the most memorable moments of the Paris Games was when Biles showed deep respect for Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade after Andrade won the floor final. Andrade, who has faced multiple ACL injuries during her career, was praised by Biles for her resilience. "Rebeca is an amazing, extraordinary athlete. What she’s overcome is truly inspiring," Biles said, acknowledging her competitor’s strength and determination.
Biles reflected on the exciting competition with Andrade, sharing that their performances had pushed each other to be their best. Despite the challenges Andrade has faced, including missing several World Championships due to injuries, Biles believes that Andrade could have easily matched her own medal tally had she been fully healthy. "I am excited to be her competitor and her friend," Biles concluded, highlighting their mutual respect and camaraderie in the sport.
