Sha’Carri Richardson Opens Season with Fourth Place

Posted : 19 May 2025

Sha’Carri Richardson, the Olympic 100m silver medallist, had a disappointing start to her season in Tokyo, finishing fourth with a time of 11.47 seconds at the Golden Grand Prix. Running with a supportive strap on her lower right leg, Richardson was slow off the blocks and never took the lead in the race, which was won by Australia’s Bree Rizzo in 11.38 seconds. Twanisha Terry from the U.S., who finished fifth at last year’s Olympics, came in second, while Canada’s Sade McCreath claimed third place.

Despite the slow start, Richardson is aiming to defend her world title in the same Tokyo stadium this September. Rizzo praised the high level of competition, noting that the top athletes would be in peak form by the time the world championships arrive.

Meanwhile, Richardson’s boyfriend and training partner, Christian Coleman, placed third in the men’s 100m with a time of 10.11 seconds. The men’s race was won by Japan’s Hiroki Yanagita in 10.06 seconds, followed closely by American Christian Miller.

In other events, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh won the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.96 meters, though she acknowledged it was below her best, citing that her body was not fully ready to perform at its peak.

Mahuchikh has also recently won at Diamond League meets in China and remains optimistic about her condition. Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi, the reigning world and Olympic javelin champion, secured victory in her event with a throw of 64.16 meters.

On the men’s side, American Robert Gregory claimed the 200m title with a time of 20.24 seconds, edging out Canada’s Andre De Grasse, who won gold at the same Tokyo stadium during the delayed 2021 Olympics. The meet showcased strong performances across disciplines, setting the stage for an exciting run-up to the world championships later this year.
