Sha’Carri Richardson Makes History with Stawell Gift Win in Record Time

Posted : 06 April 2026

American sprint sensation Sha’Carari Richardson delivered a stunning performance at the 2026 Stawell Gift on Monday, powering through the field from the back to win the women’s 120‑metre final in the fastest time in the event’s history.

Running on grass in the rural Victorian town of Stawell, Richardson overcame the handicap system that gives faster runners a disadvantage by chasing down competitors who started up to nine metres ahead.

The 26‑year‑old, who claimed the world 100m title in 2023 and took silver at the Paris Olympics in 2024, crossed the line in 13.15 seconds to secure victory, becoming only the third woman ever to win the prestigious Australian handicap race from scratch.

Her result delighted the crowd and highlighted her race execution, which she and her coach had focused on in preparation.

Richardson said she approached the unique conditions with an open mind, acknowledging the challenge of competing on grass but embracing it as part of her competitive season.

Her boyfriend, former world champion Christian Coleman, also ran off scratch but was unable to advance past the semifinals. Meanwhile, Australian sprinter Olufemi Komolafe won the men’s final with a time of 12.03 seconds, adding local success to the day’s action.

The Stawell Gift is one of Australia’s oldest and most revered footraces, first run in the gold‑rush era and held annually with only a few interruptions. Richardson’s achievement adds international flair to the event’s long history and sets a high bar for future competitors.
