Samuel Ogazi Declares He's Back to His Best with NCAA 400m Victory

Posted : 16 June 2025

Nigerian quarter-miler Samuel Ogazi reaffirmed his elite form on Friday by clinching the men’s 400 metres title at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Hayward Field. Ogazi, representing the University of Alabama, powered to victory with a leading time of 44.84 seconds, becoming the only finalist to break the 45-second barrier in a field of the nation’s top collegiate 400m athletes.

The 19‑year‑old, who reached the final as the fastest qualifier with a semi-final clock of 44.77s, drew praise for his composed back‑stretch run and strong finish, a performance that put him firmly back in the spotlight following a challenging season.

After receiving his gold medal, Ogazi expressed deep satisfaction with the result, stating he felt like he had “returned to his best.” His coach at Alabama highlighted the physical and mental strides Ogazi has made, suggesting the NCAA title may mark a shift to a new phase in his athletic development.

Ogazi’s victory not only secured the first men’s NCAA 400m title for Alabama since Kirani James in 2011 but also marked him as a prominent figure in Nigerian athletics. The 400m standout recorded a national season best and led Alabama's 4×400m relay squad to a commendable sixth-place finish with a time of 3:02.17 .

A former 2024 Paris Olympic finalist, Ogazi’s senior international credentials strengthened with this win. He recorded a personal best of 44.41s earlier in 2024 and remains among Nigeria’s fastest in the 400m.

With the Olympic Trials and upcoming World Championships qualifying on the horizon, Ogazi’s coach confirmed that this NCAA victory renews confidence in his ability to represent Nigeria on the global stage.
