Sabastian Sawe Targets Record Run at Berlin Marathon After Sub-Two-Hour Breakthrough

Posted : 13 May 2026

Sabastian Sawe is set to return to action at the Berlin Marathon in September, where he will defend his title on one of the fastest courses in world athletics. Organisers confirmed on Wednesday that the Kenyan runner will headline the 2026 edition of the race.

Sawe recently made history by becoming the first athlete to complete an official marathon in under two hours, clocking 1:59:30 at the London Marathon. The 31-year-old now aims to build on that breakthrough performance as he prepares for another major challenge in Berlin.

Expressing his excitement ahead of the race, Sawe said he plans to prepare thoroughly and deliver another strong performance at an event he holds in high regard. He added that his focus will be on running as fast as possible while respecting the significance of the competition.

The Berlin Marathon is widely regarded as one of the quickest marathon courses in the world, having produced nine men’s world records between 1998 and 2022. Sawe himself delivered the fastest marathon time of 2025 in Berlin, finishing in 2:02:16 under challenging warm conditions.

The course record is currently held by fellow Kenyan and marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, who ran 2:01:09 in 2022. Sawe acknowledged the unpredictability of race day but remains optimistic about his chances.

Organisers expect a huge turnout for the 2026 race, with nearly 60,000 runners from around 160 countries set to take part in the prestigious event.
