Ruth Usoro Adds Long Jump Silver to Nigeria's Impressive Glasgow Campaign

Posted : 03 August 2026

Team Nigeria's impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games received another boost on Saturday as Ruth Usoro claimed the silver medal in the women's long jump with an outstanding performance.

Usoro produced a best leap of 6.87 metres to finish second behind England's Jazmin Sawyers, who successfully defended her Commonwealth title with a jump of 6.93m. Australia's Brooke Buschkuehl claimed the bronze medal with a leap of 6.80m.

The medal further strengthened Nigeria's impressive athletics campaign and added to the country's growing medal tally at the Games.

Usoro's latest achievement marks another milestone in a career that has continued to flourish on the international stage.

The Akwa Ibom-born athlete rose to prominence during her collegiate career at Texas Tech University in the United States, where she established herself as one of the NCAA's most accomplished jumpers by winning multiple titles in both the long jump and triple jump.

Her outstanding performances earned her regular appearances for Nigeria at major international competitions, including the World Athletics Championships, African Championships, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympic Games.

In Glasgow, Usoro once again demonstrated her consistency by holding her own against an experienced field featuring defending champion Sawyers and Australia's Buschkuehl before securing another major international medal.

Usoro's silver medal also underscored the growing influence of Nigeria's female athletes at the Games.

Athletes such as Jessica Oji, Temitope Adeshina, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Tobi Amusan, and judoka Enku Ekuta all made significant contributions as Nigerian women continued to excel across a range of events.

The medal also reinforced athletics' position as Nigeria's biggest contributor at Glasgow 2026, with the sport accounting for a substantial share of the country's podium finishes.

Beyond increasing Team Nigeria's medal count, Usoro's performance highlighted the country's growing strength in field events and reaffirmed her status as one of Nigeria's most reliable athletes on the international stage.
