Ruth Chepngetich Suspended After Testing Positive for Banned Substance

Posted : 18 July 2025

Ruth Chepngetich, the reigning women's marathon world record holder, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) following a positive test for a banned substance. According to a statement released by the AIU, the Kenyan runner tested positive for hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a diuretic that is banned at all times under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code. The sample was collected on 14 March 2025.

HCTZ is typically used to treat conditions such as fluid retention and high blood pressure but is prohibited in sports due to its ability to act as a masking agent. Chepngetich’s urine sample reportedly showed 3,800 nanograms per millilitre—well above the minimum reporting threshold of 20 ng/mL.

Chepngetich, 30, made headlines in October 2024 when she shattered the women's marathon world record by winning the Chicago Marathon in 2:09:56, beating Tigst Assefa’s previous record from the 2023 Berlin Marathon by nearly two minutes. Her remarkable performance had been celebrated globally—until the recent doping allegations surfaced.

Although she was not immediately suspended following notification of the positive test on 16 April, Chepngetich voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension three days later while the AIU continued its investigation. On Monday, the AIU officially issued a Notice of Charge and confirmed the imposition of its own provisional suspension, according to AIU head Brett Clothier.

The development casts a shadow over one of the most notable performances in recent marathon history and signals a continuing effort by athletics authorities to enforce anti-doping rules at the highest levels of the sport.
