Ronke Akanbi Sets New National 3000m Steeplechase Record at Znamensky Memorial

Posted : 09 June 2025

On Sunday, June 8, 2025, Nigerian middle-distance runner Ronke Akanbi achieved a significant milestone at the Znamensky Brothers Memorial in Moscow. Despite finishing fifth in the women's 3000m steeplechase, Akanbi clocked a personal best of 10:17.01, surpassing her previous national record of 10:22.85 set in February 2024 in Asaba.

The race, held at the Luzhniki Stadium during Russia’s Athletics Week, featured a competitive international field. Ethiopia's Alemnat Valle secured victory with a time of 9:20.08, followed by compatriot Zeritu Daba Bekele in 9:27.64. Russian athletes Anastasia Krasilnikova and Anna Tropina placed third and fourth, respectively.

Akanbi's performance not only reaffirms her status as a rising star in African middle-distance running but also highlights Nigeria's growing presence in distance events traditionally dominated by East African nations. This achievement comes just months after she narrowly missed the 1500m national record at the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta.

The Znamensky Brothers Memorial, established in 1949 and named after Soviet long-distance runners Seraphim and Georgy Znamensky, is one of Russia's most prestigious athletics competitions. The 66th edition of the event attracted athletes from over 20 countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Cuba, and Namibia.

Akanbi's record-breaking run underscores her potential and sets a promising precedent for Nigerian athletes in international competitions. With the 2025 World Athletics Championships approaching, her performance in Moscow positions her as a formidable contender on the global stage.
