Romell Glave leads Great Britain to European 100m gold-silver finish

Romell Glave delivered a commanding performance to win the men's 100m title at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, leading Great Britain to a memorable one-two finish alongside Jeremiah Azu.

Glave crossed the line in 10.09 seconds to claim his first major international gold, upgrading the bronze medal he won in Rome two years ago. His victory made him the sixth British man to become European 100m champion and the third in the past six editions, following James Dasaolu and Zharnel Hughes.

Azu produced an equally impressive run to take silver in 10.16 seconds. The result gave the home crowd at Alexander Stadium another reason to celebrate, while Germany's Owen Ansah completed the podium in 10.19. Two-time defending champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs was unable to challenge for the medals after appearing to suffer an injury during the race.

Glave had entered the championships in strong form after breaking the 10-second barrier legally for the first time when he won the British title in June. He had also recorded several sub-10-second performances during the season, building confidence ahead of his European challenge.

The 26-year-old's career has not been without setbacks. Once regarded as one of the world's fastest young sprinters, Glave's development was interrupted by injuries, including a back problem. His consistency during the current season, however, has allowed him to rediscover his best form at an important stage of his career.

Azu's silver medal was also significant after a difficult year. The 25-year-old had finished fourth and fifth at the World Indoor Championships and Commonwealth Games respectively, but he produced his strongest championship performance of the season to return to the European podium.

The British success followed Amy Hunt's women's 100m triumph the previous day, giving the hosts gold medals in both 100m events. Great Britain's strength in the sprint events has made a major impact at these championships, with the home crowd celebrating another standout performance.

Elsewhere in Birmingham, Italy's Nadia Battocletti successfully defended her European 5,000m title, while Dutch athlete Nadine Visser won the women's 100m hurdles after edging Poland's Pia Skrzyszowska by just one thousandth of a second.
