Catherine Debrunner and Sabastian Sawe used an unusual method to settle a major scheduling decision for next year’s London Marathon, with the wheelchair world record holder defeating the men’s marathon world record holder in a game of rock, paper, scissors.
Debrunner’s victory means the elite men’s and men’s wheelchair races will take place on Saturday, April 24, 2027, while the elite women’s and women’s wheelchair events will follow on Sunday, April 25. The contest was held in front of an official adjudicator and was recognized with a Guinness World Records title as the first elite marathon race start decided by rock, paper, scissors.
The decision forms part of the London Marathon’s one-off two-day format for 2027. Organisers are expanding the event to accommodate 100,000 participants after a record 1.33 million people entered the ballot for next year’s race.
The elite men’s race will lead Saturday’s programme, alongside the men’s wheelchair event and the male Championship and Good for Age categories. Sunday will feature the elite women, women’s wheelchair competitors and the corresponding female Championship and Good for Age fields.
Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, said separating the elite races would provide a greater platform for the athletes. He also highlighted the significance of having the women’s Championship runners follow the elite women’s field on Sunday, a new feature for the London race.
The mass participation races will remain mixed on both days, with male, female and non-binary runners taking part. The same iconic route from Greenwich to Westminster will be used on both days.
Sawe enters the 2027 event as the men’s world record holder after running 1:59:30 in London in April 2026. Debrunner, meanwhile, is a four-time London champion and holds the women’s wheelchair marathon world record.
The expanded London Marathon is expected to raise more than £150 million for charity, while organisers have described the 2027 edition as a unique, one-time event. The two-day format is scheduled for April 24 and 25 before the marathon returns to its regular format.
