RIYE U-15 Athletics Circuit Uncovers Emerging Talents in Egba Zone Qualifiers

The search for the next generation of athletics stars began in earnest on Monday as the Egba Zone qualifiers of the RIYE Under-15 Athletics Circuit produced a crop of promising talents at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta.

Organised by the Tunde Delu Initiative, the grassroots athletics programme attracted athletes from 18 schools across the zone, all competing for coveted spots in the grand finale scheduled for June 26.

Participating schools included Segun Odegbami International College and Sports Academy, Abeokuta Grammar School, Salawu Abiola Comprehensive High School, Rev. Kuti Memorial Anglican School, Greenland Academy, Well Watered Schools, and Lafenwa High School, among others.

Following the screening exercise, competition intensified across various track and field events as athletes showcased their speed, strength, and jumping abilities in pursuit of qualification.

One of the standout performers of the day was Adigun Noah, who dominated the boys' sprint events.

He claimed victory in the 100 metres with a time of 11.56 seconds ahead of Ehisanya Success (11.81 seconds), before returning to win the boys' 200 metres and secure a second qualification ticket. Oyeniran Lukman finished second in the 200 metres.

In the girls' 100 metres, Elekede delivered an impressive performance to finish first in 12.42 seconds, while Adegbite Ikmot placed second in 12.72 seconds, with both athletes advancing to the final.

The field events also produced exciting contests. Adesanya Ayanfe and Adegbesan Success emerged as the top two finishers in the boys' shot put, while Olowobese Seyi and Odesanya Oyinkansola qualified from the girls' category.

Middle-distance events witnessed strong performances as Gogo Eunice won the girls' 400 metres, ahead of Balogun Dorcas, while Adebayo David and Lasisi Adisa secured qualification from the boys' race.

In the long jump competition, Awesu Abdulwahab and Olatunji Jomiloju booked places in the boys' final, while Oyelaja Ayowande and Okewole Olamide emerged as the leading qualifiers in the girls' event.

Speaking after the competition, organiser Tunde Delu expressed delight with the quality of participation and the enthusiasm displayed by schools, athletes, and spectators.

He noted that the initiative was designed to identify and develop young athletics talents across Ogun State, adding that the performances witnessed in Abeokuta reinforced his belief that the programme would help produce future champions.

With the Egba Zone qualifiers completed, attention now shifts to the remaining zonal competitions in Ilaro, Sagamu, and Ijebu-Ode as more young athletes seek qualification for the grand finale on June 26.

The successful hosting of the Egba Zone qualifiers marks a vital milestone in discovering raw sporting talents at the grassroots level. By offering school children a structured platform to display their skills, the initiative lays a solid foundation for regional sports development. The outstanding individual achievements seen during the events show that the region possesses immense athletic potential ready for the national stage.
