The 2025 ASA Senior Track and Field Championships in Potchefstroom have been hailed as one of the most impressive editions in recent memory, thanks to stellar performances by both veteran and emerging athletes.
\The event, hosted at the NWU McArthur Athletics Stadium, saw eight athletes meet the qualifying standards for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, with five of them securing their first-ever qualification.
Among the qualifiers were Gift Leotlela and Bayanda Walaza in the men’s 100m, Sinesipho Dambile, Naaem Jack, and Abduraqhmaan Karriem in the men’s 200m, Zakithi Nene in the 400m, and Prudence Sekgodiso alongside Charne Swart-Du Plessis in the women’s 800m.
The championship also produced remarkable individual feats. Colette Uys delivered a standout performance in the field events, earning gold in both the shot put—with a powerful throw of 18.14m, narrowly missing the national record—and discus, while also collecting silver in the hammer throw.
Long-distance standout Glenrose Xaba continued her dominance with a successful defense of her 5,000m/10,000m double, marking her 10th senior national track title.
Junior athletes also made headlines, with 17-year-old Leendert Koekemoer breaking a 31-year-old SA U20 record in the men’s 400m, and 19-year-old Alicia Khunou setting a new junior record in the women’s discus.
South African athletes also made their mark internationally last week. Akani Simbine claimed victory in the men's 100m at the opening leg of the Diamond League in China, clocking a time of 9.99 seconds.
Meanwhile, Elroy Gelant broke a longstanding national marathon record at the Hamburg Marathon in Germany, finishing fourth in 2:05:36 and surpassing Gert Thys’ 1999 mark.
Athletics South Africa President James Moloi praised the athletes’ achievements and expressed confidence in their growing momentum, citing their consistent performances as a sign of the country’s rising potential on the global athletics stage.
