Richard Kilty Retires from Athletics After Decorated Sprinting Career

Posted : 05 March 2025

British sprinter Richard Kilty has announced his retirement from athletics, bringing an end to a career that saw him claim multiple international medals. The 35-year-old won the 60m gold at the 2014 World Indoor Championships in Poland and secured back-to-back European indoor titles in 2015 and 2017.

Kilty was also part of Team GB's men's 4x100m relay squad that won bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics, contributing in the heats before his teammates secured the medal in the final.

Throughout his career, Kilty, known as the "Teesside Tornado," amassed eight major international medals, with five coming in relay events. He played a crucial role in Britain's 4x100m relay successes, winning gold at the 2014 European Championships, the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and silver at the 2019 World Championships.

However, his Olympic silver medal from Tokyo 2020 was revoked after a doping violation by teammate CJ Ujah, making his Paris 2024 bronze an important moment of redemption.

Following the Paris Games, Kilty has transitioned into coaching, mentoring Britain's emerging sprint talent, Louie Hinchliffe, who shared the Olympic podium with him.

Despite not competing in the Olympic final due to an Achilles injury sustained in the heats, Kilty described his final Olympic medal as the completion of his "recovery mission." His retirement marks the end of a decorated career that saw him succeed both individually and as a key member of Britain's relay teams.
