Double Olympic cycling champion Remco Evenepoel sustained multiple injuries during a training accident in Brussels on Tuesday when he collided with the open door of a postal van. The 24-year-old suffered fractures to his ribs, right shoulder blade, and right hand.
Following the incident, Evenepoel was transferred to a specialist hospital where a procedure on his shoulder was scheduled, according to a statement from his team, Quick-Step Soudal.
Evenepoel's career has been marked by a series of dramatic crashes. In 2020, he plunged into a ravine during a race in Italy. At the 2023 Giro d'Italia, a dog brought him down mid-race, and earlier this year, he endured a high-speed fall at the Tour of the Basque Country.
Despite these setbacks, Evenepoel has achieved remarkable success, including winning gold in both the individual time trial and the road race at the Paris Olympics, as well as securing the best young rider's jersey at the Tour de France.
Witnesses to the Brussels crash described a distressing scene, with Evenepoel lying conscious but visibly shaken and ashen-faced.
The force of the impact left his bike shattered in two. Quick-Step Soudal’s team manager, Patrick Lefevere, shared that Evenepoel called him shortly after the accident, explaining that the collision occurred when a postal worker opened the van door as he cycled past.
Evenepoel's achievements extend beyond his Olympic triumphs. In September, he successfully defended his world time-trial title in Zurich and is also a former winner of the Vuelta a España. The cycling community is hopeful for his swift recovery, given his resilience and ability to overcome previous challenges.
