World indoor champion Prudence Sekgodiso continued her remarkable run on the 2025 Diamond League circuit with another podium finish, taking second place in the women’s 800m race at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on Saturday night.
Sekgodiso delivered a powerful performance, pushing Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma to the finish line. She equalled her personal best time of 1:57.16, just six hundredths of a second behind Duguma, who won the race in 1:57.10. Uganda's Halimah Nakaayi completed an all-African podium, clocking 1:57.89 to finish third.
This result marks Sekgodiso’s third top-three finish in this year’s Diamond League series, following a second-place showing in Rabat and a third-place finish in Stockholm. Her consistent presence on the podium continues to strengthen her reputation as one of the leading contenders in the women’s 800m on the global stage.
In the men's 100m, 19-year-old Bayanda Walaza made his Diamond League debut for South Africa. Facing a highly competitive field, Walaza finished sixth in a time of 10.04 seconds. The race was won by Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, who clocked a swift 9.85 seconds, with four athletes dipping under the 10-second barrier.
The next stop on the Diamond League calendar is Monaco on Friday, 11 July, where athletes will again compete at the highest level ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Championships.
Athletics South Africa President James Moloi praised Sekgodiso for her performance, stating, “Congratulations to Prudence for another podium achievement which continues to cement her consistency. She has not only shown that she can compete with the best, but that she belongs among the elite. We also extend our gratitude to her coach and support team for their commitment.”
Moloi also encouraged other athletes to draw inspiration from Sekgodiso’s discipline and drive, adding, “Her attitude toward performance is something we hope influences more young South African athletes striving for international success.”
