With less than seven weeks remaining before the scheduled opening of the 23rd National Sports Festival, the Enugu State Government has reiterated its commitment to delivering a successful competition amid growing concerns over preparations.
The festival is scheduled to begin on Nov. 27, with stakeholders seeking greater clarity on the readiness of sporting facilities and the commencement of registration for athletes and officials.
The state government’s assurance followed an inspection tour of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, one of the key venues expected to host events during the national sporting gathering.
The Commissioner for Works, Benjamin Okoh, expressed confidence in the preparations, insisting that the government remained committed to ensuring that the required facilities were ready for the competition.
However, the reassurance has not fully eased concerns among sports administrators, participating states and athletes, as questions persist about the pace of preparations with the opening date drawing closer.
A major source of concern is the reported delay in opening registration for athletes and officials, a development that has raised questions about the overall organisation and logistics of the festival.
The uncertainty has also fuelled speculation about a possible postponement, although no official decision to that effect has been confirmed.
Stakeholders have drawn comparisons with the postponement of the Intermediate Games in Lagos, reportedly linked to inadequate sporting facilities, and have urged the relevant authorities to address potential challenges before they disrupt the national competition.
Attention is now turning to the National Sports Commission (NSC), which is expected to play a key role in assessing the host state’s level of preparedness and providing direction on the way forward.
A clear position from the commission, alongside regular updates on facility readiness and registration arrangements, could help address the growing uncertainty within the sporting community.
For Enugu, the challenge extends beyond issuing assurances to demonstrating tangible progress on the ground, particularly in completing competition venues and putting essential administrative arrangements in place.
As the countdown continues, the ability of the state government and relevant sports authorities to resolve outstanding concerns will be crucial to building confidence and ensuring that the 2026 National Sports Festival proceeds successfully as scheduled.
