With just 15 days remaining until the 2025 PremiumTrust Bank Abuja City International Half Marathon, a significant milestone has been reached as World Athletics has officially certified the second edition of the race.
This certification enhances the marathon’s global profile and underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in the international road-running scene. The highly anticipated event is scheduled for Saturday, December 6, in the Federal Capital Territory.
The certification follows a visit by World Athletics officials to Nigeria last month, led by Alessio Punzi, Head of Running and Mass Participation. During his visit, Punzi reaffirmed World Athletics’ commitment to the development of the sport in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, commending the country’s progress in organizing mass-participation events.
Speaking on the significance of this year’s edition, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Limited (NSML), Yetunde Olopade, emphasized the economic and social impact of long-distance races in Nigeria.
“Long-distance races have steadily become a source of economic growth for the nation. This year’s route has been carefully designed to allow residents and spectators to fully appreciate the brilliance and endurance of the runners,” she said.
Olopade added that the marathon promotes healthy living, boosts tourism, and stimulates business activity throughout the city.
