Phoebe Gill, who made history at last year's Belfast Irish Milers Meet with a record-breaking 800m performance, will return to the event this May. At just 17 years old, Gill set a new European Under-18 800m record by clocking 1:57.86, nearly four seconds faster than her previous personal best.
This victory marked the beginning of an impressive season for the St Albans athlete, which saw her claim the 800m title at the British Championships and reach the semi-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This year, Gill will race the 1500m at the Belfast meeting, set to take place at the Mary Peters Track on May 10. She will face stiff competition, including Great Britain's Innes FitzGerald, a double European junior cross-country champion, and England's Ava Lloyd, who finished fifth in the 1500m at the World Under-20 Championships.
Additionally, Scotland's Erin Wallace, who finished second behind Gill in the 800m last year, will look to claim the top spot this time, joined by Czech champion Kimberley Ficenec in the 800m field.
The Belfast Irish Milers Meet is gaining significant attention, and last year’s event set a high bar, with Callum Dodds breaking the 1:45 mark in the men’s 800m, which secured him a spot on the European Championships team.
Dodds will return to the track to defend his title, with stiff competition from compatriot Tom Randolph, who also dipped under 1:45 in last year’s meet. Ireland’s Sharlene Mawdsley, who played a pivotal role in the country's mixed relay gold at the European Championships, will also compete, facing strong challengers including Great Britain’s Isabelle Boffey.
Race director Eamonn Christie expressed his excitement over the meet's growing prestige, as entries sold out in just 15 minutes following the opening on January 19. Athletes from across Europe, including Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Poland, will compete, adding to the international flavor of the event.
The prestigious status of the event is further highlighted by its inclusion in the World Athletics Continental Tour, attracting some of the best athletes from around the world.
