Phethisang Makhethe delivered a standout performance at the weekend, shattering the South African women's hammer throw record. Competing at the Big Ten Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Makhethe secured the silver medal with an impressive final throw of 68.66 meters.
She was narrowly beaten by American Anthonett Nabwe, who took gold with a meeting record throw of 69.85 meters. Makhethe’s mark surpassed the previous South African record of 67.95 meters, set by Leandri Holtzhausen in Tokyo earlier this year, improving her personal best by nearly two meters from her prior best of 66.80 meters achieved just weeks before.
James Moloi, President of Athletics South Africa, praised Makhethe's achievement, highlighting the significance of her progress in a challenging field event. He also congratulated her coach and support team for their role in her development, recognizing the promising trajectory of the 22-year-old athlete.
