Years of perseverance and unwavering belief finally paid off for Nigeria's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi as he claimed a historic gold medal in the men's shot put at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 32-year-old produced a composed performance in a tightly contested final, edging his closest rival by just four centimetres to secure the first major international title of his career outside the African continent.

An emotional Enekwechi admitted after the competition that the victory represented the fulfilment of a dream he had pursued for many years.

"I didn't know if this moment was ever going to be possible," he said. "I came into this competition with a lot of things working against me, but I just kept swinging. I never gave up. Sometimes persistence pays off, and today is proof of that."

The triumph marked a defining milestone for the Nigerian, who has spent much of the past decade competing consistently among the world's leading shot put athletes without landing a major global championship title.

Enekwechi said the challenge in Glasgow extended beyond his rivals, with cold weather, strong winds, and an unusual throwing circle making the event particularly demanding.

"I was very concerned," he said. "Fortunately, today was one of the better days weather-wise, but it was still cold and windy. At this stage of the outdoor season, you expect sunshine and warm temperatures, not grey skies and chilly conditions. It made it difficult to stay warm, and we were literally throwing uphill, which is almost symbolic of my career—it's always been an uphill battle."

Despite the difficult conditions preventing the athletes from producing their best distances, the Nigerian remained focused on the ultimate prize.

"The conditions just weren't ideal," he said. "If you wanted a true measure of what we were capable of, you'd probably have to add some distance to today's marks. But everyone faced the same challenge. We were all incredibly close throughout the competition. In the end, it was enough to win, and that's what matters."

For Enekwechi, the gold medal carried far greater significance than any personal record.

"Today, the distance didn't matter. What mattered was winning the gold medal. The big throws will come, but this gold medal is far sweeter than any personal best I could have achieved."

The victory strengthens Team Nigeria's medal haul in Glasgow while cementing Enekwechi's place among the country's finest field athletes, rewarding years of resilience with the international crown that had long eluded him.

His success also serves as a testament to perseverance and determination, adding another memorable chapter to Team Nigeria's campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and reinforcing the country's growing reputation in international athletics.
