Paula Radcliffe Finds Tokyo Marathon Victory Sweeter Amid Perimenopause Challenges

Posted : 04 March 2025

Paula Radcliffe described completing the Tokyo Marathon as even more rewarding due to her experience with perimenopause. The 51-year-old, who finished the race in under three hours, explained that managing the fatigue and muscle recovery challenges brought on by hormonal changes made the achievement even sweeter.

Since retiring in 2015, she has taken up running as a hobby rather than a career, balancing training with family responsibilities.

Perimenopause, which typically begins a few years before menopause, can bring symptoms such as hot flushes, heavy bleeding, and heart palpitations.

Radcliffe acknowledged the difficulties of juggling training with everyday life and expressed admiration for those who manage careers and family alongside their fitness goals.

She noted that the sense of accomplishment at the finish line felt even more special given the challenges she had faced.

Radcliffe now aims to complete all six major marathons, with the Boston Marathon next on her list. Having previously competed in London, New York, Chicago, and Berlin during her professional career, her recent participation in Tokyo brings her one step closer to that goal.

She remains an inspiration to many, demonstrating resilience and determination despite the physical changes brought on by age and hormonal shifts.
