Paris Olympics opening ceremony may relocate amid security concerns, says Macron

Posted : 16 April 2024

French President Emmanuel Macron announced today that the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, initially planned to unfold along the Seine River, might relocate to the Stade de France if security risks are deemed too high. Macron emphasized that while France's security forces would be mobilized extensively for the open-air event, alternative scenarios, including plans B and C, are in place should risks persist.

Scheduled for July 26, the ceremony marks a historic departure as the first Olympic opening held outside a stadium, with 10,500 athletes expected to traverse a 6km route through Paris on boats along the Seine. To mitigate security concerns, Macron suggested the possibility of shortening the parade route and potentially moving the ceremony back to the stadium for a more conventional opening.

Originally envisioned as a grand spectacle welcoming up to 600,000 spectators, logistical and security considerations prompted the government to scale back its plans earlier this year. Consequently, access to the opening ceremony will be restricted to those with reservations, with free access limited due to security apprehensions, a departure from the initial plan of open access for tourists.
