Para Sports Enthusiasts Call for Urgent Renovation of National Stadium Ahead of National Camp

Posted : 25 June 2025

Athletes and para sports enthusiasts are rallying together to demand immediate renovation of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, ahead of national camping for the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships scheduled for Santiago, Chile.

Leading the call is a group known as Para Sports Advocates, with their coordinator, Dayo Oladeji, stressing the urgency of repairs to ensure a smooth and productive training camp.

Currently, the stadium's facilities are in a state of disrepair, with a severely leaking rooftop causing waterlogged floors, making the venue unsafe and unsuitable for national training activities. This poses serious risks to athletes’ performance and health.

Given the high stakes of the upcoming World Championships, where Nigeria’s para powerlifters will represent the nation, access to safe and functional facilities is not just a convenience—it’s a necessity.

The Nigeria Para Powerlifting Federation has been active in talent identification and development. Recent national trials in Abuja unveiled a promising group of record-breaking para lifters, now preparing to compete on the world stage.

For these athletes to succeed internationally, they require a supportive training environment that enables them to refine their skills and maintain peak condition.

Oladeji emphasized that the renovation of the National Stadium is essential for athlete development. “This is about giving our athletes the tools they need to win for Nigeria,” he said. “They deserve facilities that reflect the excellence we expect of them.”

The Para Sports Advocates are appealing to relevant authorities, including the Federal Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Commission, and private stakeholders to act swiftly in addressing the stadium’s condition.

With time running out before the camp opens, the group insists that action must be taken urgently to avoid compromising the athletes’ preparation and Nigeria’s chances on the global stage.

The nation is counting on its para powerlifters, and it is imperative that these athletes are given the support they need to bring glory to the country.
