Riyadh 2025: Oyesade Rues Missed Gold Medal

Posted : 19 November 2025

Nigeria’s Olatoye Oyesade has expressed disappointment after missing out on the gold medal, settling instead for silver in the Women’s Hammer Throw Final at the Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The US-based athlete lost the top spot to Algeria’s Zahra Tatar after what she admitted were not her best throws during the final attempts. Oyesade secured the silver medal with a throw of 63.34 metres, while Tatar claimed gold with 63.55 metres. Uzbekistan’s Norsijovona Zarinakhon finished third, recording a throw of 61.69 metres.

Despite the near miss, Oyesade stated that the silver medal would motivate her to intensify preparations ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I am very happy for this competition and the exposure to be here, and it will definitely propel me for the Commonwealth Games, where I aim to finish on the podium after placing fourth in Birmingham in 2022,” she said.

“I’m really excited for next year, and going away with a medal from here is still amazing despite not winning the ultimate prize, the gold medal.”

She added that although it has been a long track season—expected to conclude with the World Championships in Tokyo—competing during the off-season remains a privilege and an honour whenever she represents Nigeria.

Nigeria’s medal haul at the Games now stands at 18 medals: 6 gold, 8 silver, and 4 bronze.
