Over 3,000 Runners Set for 2026 Abeokuta 10KM Race

Posted : 01 October 2026

More than 3,000 runners are expected to compete in the fifth edition of the Abeokuta 10KM Race on Saturday, October 3, in Ogun State. The race is organised by Nilayo Sports Management Limited and has attracted participants from different parts of Nigeria.

The event will begin at Macjob Grammar School, Onikolobo, at 7:00 a.m. Runners will pass through several parts of Abeokuta before finishing at the MKO Abiola International Stadium in Kuto. The official race information confirms October 3 as the event date and lists Macjob Grammar School as the starting point.

A major feature of the 2026 edition is its all-Nigerian format. Organisers have restricted participation to Nigerian athletes, making the race a platform for homegrown distance runners to compete for honours and prize money.

The organisers initially scheduled the race for September 26 but later moved it to October 3. Nilayo Sports Management said the adjustment was necessary because of preparations and arrangements that could not be overlooked, while assuring athletes and other stakeholders that the change would not affect the event’s plans.

The strong registration numbers have increased interest ahead of the race. More than 3,000 athletes had registered before the final days of preparation, with residents, sports administrators and other spectators expected to gather along the route.

Beyond the competition, the race is expected to generate activity for businesses across Abeokuta. Food vendors, transport operators, artisans and hospitality businesses along the route are expected to benefit from the movement of athletes, officials and spectators.

Nilayo Sports Management CEO Yetunde Olopade said the event would combine athletics with culture, tourism and local economic activity. She also said sports administrators, current and former athletes and other guests are expected to attend the fifth edition.

The race will also provide a platform for Nigerian long-distance runners to compete on home soil. The official event website states that the race is supported by the Ogun State Government and certified by international road-racing bodies.

With the field now above 3,000 registered runners, attention turns to Saturday’s race in Abeokuta. The competition will start at 7:00 a.m., with the runners expected to complete the 10-kilometre route before finishing at the MKO Abiola International Stadium.
