Oregon2026: Nigeria’s Female Relays Secure Double Finals Berths at World U-20 Championships

Team Nigeria’s medal hopes received another boost at the World Athletics U-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, as the women’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams both qualified for their respective finals.

The women’s 4x100m quartet of Tejiri Praise Ugoh, Lucy Nwankwo, Chigozie Nwankwo and Oluebube Ezechukwu produced a season’s best of 43.65 seconds to secure automatic qualification for the final.

Nigeria’s qualification was achieved in dramatic fashion, with anchor-leg runner Ezechukwu producing a superb finish after receiving the baton significantly behind the United States.

Ezechukwu mounted a spirited late charge down the home straight, steadily eating into the American lead before powering past them at the line.

Nigeria crossed the finish in 43.65 seconds, just 0.02 seconds ahead of the United States, which clocked 43.67 seconds to finish fourth and miss out on automatic qualification.

The performance earned Nigeria the third automatic qualifying spot in the heat and placed the quartet among the medal contenders for the final.

Earlier, Becky Ebiyadi, Jecinta Lawrence, Ugoh and Faith Ezechukwu had also advanced to the women’s 4x400m final after recording a season’s best of 3:35.28.

The Nigerian quartet finished third in its heat behind Italy and Great Britain, securing one of the available qualification places.

With both relay teams now through to the finals, Nigeria has strengthened its prospects of adding to its medal haul at the championships.

Attention will also turn to Success Uyibo, who will compete in the women’s 200m final in Saturday’s evening session, alongside the women’s 4x100m relay final.

The finals will provide Team Nigeria with another opportunity to challenge for honours as the championships enter their decisive stages.
