As the countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games gathers pace, Team Nigeria received a timely boost after Udodi Onwuzurike and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi secured podium finishes at the Gyulai István Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix in Budapest.
The encouraging performances come just days before the start of the Games in Glasgow, underlining Nigeria's growing confidence across both the track and field events.
Onwuzurike continued his impressive run of form in the men's 200 metres, finishing third in 20.18 seconds to equal his season's best. Zimbabwe's Makanakaishe Charamba placed second in 20.09 seconds, while Morocco's Yassine Hssine stormed to victory in a national record time of 19.92 seconds.
The result further reinforces Onwuzurike's credentials as one of Nigeria's leading sprint medal prospects heading into Glasgow.
In the men's shot put, African record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also delivered a strong performance, claiming third place with a best throw of 21.48 metres.
Italy's Leonardo Fabbri won the event with a throw of 22.04m, edging Jamaica's Rajindra Campbell, who finished second with 21.52m.
Elsewhere, Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme produced one of the standout performances of the meeting, winning the men's 100m in 9.99 seconds to emerge as the only athlete to dip below the 10-second mark. Ghana's Abdul-Rasheed Saminu finished second in 10.01 seconds, while Jamaica's Ackeem Blake was third in 10.04 seconds.
In the men's 400m, Zambia's Muzala Samukonga strengthened his Commonwealth Games credentials by cruising to victory in a season's best time of 44.02 seconds.
