In a bid to improve on their performance at the maiden edition of the Niger Delta Games (NDG), the Ondo State Liaison Committee has urged coaches across 17 sports to ensure that only the very best athletes are presented to represent the state.
The second edition of the Niger Delta Games will hold in Benin, Edo State, from February 20-27. Sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission, the Games are organized by Dunamis-Icon Limited.
The Secretary of the Committee, Henry Babatunde, issued the charge during a meeting with coaches at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure. Babatunde encouraged coaches to intensify training ahead of the trials to enhance the competitive strength of the athletes representing the state.
He also commended the coaches for registering their athletes in good numbers. “We should intensify training, even though trials have not commenced. The athletes attending the trials must be fully prepared for the task ahead,” he said.
Babatunde further urged the coaches to conduct a thorough selection process and avoid favoritism.
A committee member, Akintunde Akinsemola, advised coaches to leverage the availability of the medical team to assess the athletes’ health. “Ensure the medical team performs routine health checks from the day athletes enter camp until they depart for Benin. Be vigilant and report any anomalies to our doctors,” he said.
Coaches were also reminded to ensure athletes have their National Identification Number (NIN) and other relevant documents ready for screening before the competition.
The new General Manager of the Ondo State Sports Council, Mrs. Evelyn Lebi, who is also a committee member, assured that all raised points would be closely monitored to guarantee a strong performance at the Games. She thanked the coaches for their diligence in registering athletes within the designated time frame.
