Olympic silver medalist Katarina Johnson-Thompson has withdrawn from her highly anticipated return to heptathlon competition, pulling out of this weekend's prestigious Gotzis Hypo Meeting in Austria due to a minor injury. The 32-year-old, a two-time heptathlon world champion, expressed her profound disappointment on Thursday, stating she was "really gutted" to miss the event.
She had been eagerly anticipating her first heptathlon since securing her inaugural Olympic medal at last year's Paris Games, particularly looking forward to competing at Gotzis, an event she holds in high regard.
Johnson-Thompson took to Instagram to share the news, reassuring fans that her injury was not serious and that she expects to be back on the track soon. "It is with a heavy heart that I've had to make this decision," she wrote, emphasizing that "the injury is nothing serious and I'll be back on the track shortly."
This setback temporarily postpones her return to the multi-discipline event where she famously earned an Olympic silver medal in Paris, finishing just behind Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam.
Her withdrawal from Gotzis is a precautionary measure, allowing her to recover fully and prepare for future competitions. The British athlete's focus will now shift to rehabilitation and training to ensure she is in peak condition for the remainder of the season, with her sights undoubtedly set on upcoming major championships.
