Okowa hails Nigerian athletes' dominance in NCAA Regionals

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has lauded the impressive performances of Nigerian athletes at the ongoing NCAA East and West Regionals in the United States, describing their achievements as a testament to the country's growing strength in global athletics.

Leading the list of standout performers is sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi of Auburn University, who stormed to a world-leading time of 9.84 seconds in the men's 100 metres. The remarkable feat saw him erase the Nigerian record of 9.85 seconds set by Olusoji Fasuba two decades ago in 2006.

Also earning special praise from the AFN President was Samuel Ogazi of the University of Alabama, who produced a sensational run of 43.82 seconds in the men's 400 metres. The performance not only established a new personal best for the quarter-miler but also elevated him to the top of the world rankings for the season.

Reacting to the performances, Okowa expressed delight at the growing impact of Nigerian athletes in the collegiate athletics system in the United States.

"We are extremely proud of our athletes who continue to make Nigeria proud on the global stage. Kanyinsola Ajayi, Samuel Ogazi, Israel Okon, Nicholas Fakorede, Alaba Akintola, Edidiong Udo, Joshua Caleb, Charles Godfred, Favour Onyah, Chioma Nwachukwu, Tima Godbless, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Prestina Ochonogor, John Caleb, and David Akhalu, among others, have shown tremendous determination and excellence," he said.

The AFN President noted that several Nigerian athletes have successfully secured qualification for the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships scheduled for next month in Eugene, Oregon.

According to him, their achievements have once again reinforced Nigeria's reputation as a breeding ground for world-class athletic talent.

Okowa assured the athletes of the federation's support and the prayers of Nigerians as they prepare for their respective finals and the highly anticipated championships in Eugene.

"I congratulate all of them for their outstanding performances and wish them continued success in the competitions ahead," he added.

The remarkable achievements at the NCAA Regionals highlight the incredible potential of these young sprinters and quarter-milers on the international stage. With critical qualifications secured, the athletes have positioned the nation for a strong showing at the upcoming national championships. The federation remains committed to fostering this exceptional talent as they target further global honours in Eugene, Oregon.
