The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, has praised the country's young athletes following their dominant performance at the CAA Region II U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Dakar, Senegal.
Speaking after leading the Nigerian contingent back to Lagos on Wednesday night, Okowa described the team's outing as a strong indication of the country's bright future in athletics.
The delegation arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport at about 11:00 p.m., following a successful campaign in Senegal, where Nigeria emerged overall champions with an impressive haul of 15 gold, seven silver, and one bronze medal.
Okowa, who attended the championships in his dual role as President of CAA Region II and President of the AFN, commended the athletes for their discipline, commitment, and outstanding performances throughout the competition.
According to him, the success recorded in Dakar reflects the abundance of athletic talent in Nigeria and validates the federation's efforts to identify and develop future champions.
"We have made a big statement in Dakar that Nigeria is blessed with talent. The future of athletics in Nigeria is bright. We have put in place a system to nurture them and monitor their transition to the elite level.
"Once again, I congratulate them for being Nigeria's worthy ambassadors in Dakar," Okowa said.
Nigeria's commanding performance at the regional championships further reinforced the country's status as one of Africa's leading athletics nations, with several young athletes expected to progress into the senior national team in the coming years.
The impressive showing in Dakar highlights the effectiveness of the AFN's youth development programme and provides further optimism for the future of Nigerian athletics on the continental and global stage.
