Athletic Heat CEO, Ese Oguma, has commended Nigeria’s accomplished athletes, Kelechi Nwanaga and Esther Osisike, for investing in domestic athletics through a combined ₦200,000 prize sponsorship for the organisation’s 10th Anniversary Meet.
The sponsorship will support the women’s javelin and discus events, with both athletes contributing ₦100,000 to reward the top three finishers in their respective disciplines.
Nwanaga, Nigeria’s national record holder in the women’s javelin, is backing her specialist event, while Osisike, a standout thrower with the UTEP Miners in the United States, is sponsoring the women’s discus.
Under the arrangement, winners in both events will receive ₦50,000, while the second- and third-place finishers will earn ₦30,000 and ₦20,000, respectively.
The anniversary meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
Oguma welcomed the initiative, noting that athletes’ contributions could help strengthen domestic competitions by creating more opportunities for emerging talents to showcase their abilities.
The Athletic Heat chief executive expressed appreciation to Nwanaga and Osisike for supporting the competition, describing such investments as valuable contributions to the growth of athletics.
Nwanaga’s involvement reflects her achievements in Nigerian and African athletics.
She won silver at the 2015 African Junior Championships before claiming gold at the African Games the same year.
She later finished fourth at the 2016 African Championships and sixth at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, before winning the African Championships title in 2018 and defending her African Games crown in 2019.
Her personal best of 58.15 metres, recorded in Ozoro in July 2017, remains the Nigerian national record in the women’s javelin.
Osisike, meanwhile, has continued to establish herself in collegiate athletics in the United States.
During the 2025 outdoor season, she won the Conference USA discus title with a personal-best throw of 56.22 metres, earning qualification for the NCAA West First Round.
She also won the shot put and discus events at the Desert Heat Classic and Sun City Classic.
In addition, Osisike recorded a personal best of 55.27 metres in the hammer throw at the Don Kirby Tailwind Twilight and a shot put best of 15.13 metres at the Beach Invite.
Her progress followed an encouraging freshman season in 2024, when she qualified for the NCAA West First Round in the discus and earned All-Conference USA Second Team honours.
She also won silver in the discus at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a throw of 49.85 metres.
The contributions by both athletes provide additional financial incentives for competitors at the Lagos competition while highlighting the potential for accomplished Nigerian athletes to support the next generation.
The 10th Anniversary Meet will feature various track and field events as Athletic Heat marks a decade of promoting athletics and providing competition opportunities for athletes.
With cash rewards now available in the women’s javelin and discus, the throwing events will offer participants an additional incentive to deliver strong performances at the anniversary competition.
