Ochonogor Misses Commonwealth Games Long Jump After Entry Appeal Fails

Posted : 27 July 2026

Team Nigeria's Prestina Ochonogor has been ruled out of the women's long jump at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after organisers rejected Nigeria's request to include her in the event following the withdrawal of Ese Brume.

Nigeria had attempted to strengthen its representation by seeking approval to enter both Ochonogor and Ruth Usoro after Brume withdrew from the competition. However, the request was declined because competition regulations do not allow one withdrawn athlete to be replaced by two competitors.

The decision leaves Ochonogor unable to compete despite being available for selection. It is another setback for the promising jumper, who had hoped to make her Commonwealth Games debut after enjoying steady progress on the international stage.

Ruth Usoro remains Nigeria's only eligible representative in the women's long jump following the ruling. The national team will now rely on her to challenge for honours in an event where Nigeria has enjoyed success in recent years through Brume's consistent performances.

Brume's withdrawal had already dealt a significant blow to Team Nigeria's medal prospects. The experienced jumper has been one of Africa's leading athletes over the past decade, winning medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Commonwealth Games, and African Championships.

Nigeria's athletics officials explored every available option to maintain a strong presence in the event, but the organisers upheld the competition rules governing athlete entries and replacements. As a result, the country's request could not be accommodated before the start of the competition.

The development reduces Nigeria's depth in one of its strongest field events and places greater responsibility on Usoro to deliver a competitive performance against a strong international field.

Despite the setback, Team Nigeria remains hopeful of securing medals across several athletics events during the Commonwealth Games. The country's squad features a mix of experienced stars and emerging talents aiming to make an impact in Glasgow as the athletics programme continues.
