NSC Insists Favour Ofili Remains A Nigerian Athlete

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has firmly stated that sprint star Favour Ofili remains a Nigerian athlete. This comes after her coach, Dennis Shaver, raised questions about her participation in the national trials for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The NSC responded quickly to Shaver's social media post. The coach expressed concerns and clarified that Ofili would not compete at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria's Commonwealth Games Trials in Lagos. Reports suggest her name appeared in the entry list, prompting his strong reaction.

NSC officials dismissed any suggestions of a change in Ofili's sporting nationality. They stressed there has been no official communication indicating otherwise. The commission urged the public to ignore unverified reports.

Ofili, a standout talent in Nigerian athletics, has shone in the 100m and 200m events. She holds national records and made her Olympic debut for Nigeria. Her performances include reaching the 200m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Earlier this year, Ofili attempted to switch allegiance to Turkey. World Athletics rejected the move, partly due to her past representation and support received from Nigerian programmes. This kept her eligible for Nigeria in major events.

The NSC has previously urged Ofili to return to the national fold. They promised full support for future competitions, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Director General Bukola Olopade described her as "our daughter" and highlighted ongoing talks with the AFN.

Shaver's latest comments have sparked fresh debate. The AFN also warned the coach against misleading the athlete. Despite the tension, the NSC remains committed to proper processes for athlete representation.

Ofili's situation reflects broader challenges in Nigerian athletics. Administrative issues have frustrated some talents in the past, including at previous Olympics. Yet, her potential keeps her central to national hopes.

The commission continues to back its athletes. It aims to resolve matters according to rules while supporting stars like Ofili in their careers.
