The National Sports Commission (NSC) has called for full accountability from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) following concerns raised by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) over potential age discrepancies among Nigerian athletes. The AIU, under World Athletics, requested clarification regarding the ages of several young athletes who competed at the CAA U18/U20 Championship in Abeokuta.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko expressed his strong disapproval, emphasizing that any instances of age falsification would not be tolerated. “At a time we are giving no place to age cheat in our sports, this will not be swept under the carpet. We are determined to get it right from our age-grade competitions,” he said. NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade added that the AFN must demonstrate competence and diligence to restore confidence and prevent further international embarrassment.
In response, NSC convened a meeting with key AFN officials, including Technical Director Gabriel Okon and national coaches, to address the issue. Olopade stressed that officials must be held accountable, particularly as the commission intensifies efforts to eliminate age cheating across Nigerian sports. “Youth competitions are for developmental purposes; the win-at-all-cost syndrome must stop,” he said, urging collaboration from all stakeholders to maintain integrity.
As part of immediate action, the NSC announced that two athletes had been dropped from Team Nigeria’s camp ahead of the Africa Youth Games in Angola due to age concerns. The commission has called on the AFN to promptly resolve the AIU’s queries and safeguard Nigeria’s reputation in international athletics.
