NSC Charges Team Nigeria to Target Podium Finishes at World Athletics Relays in Gaborone

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has formally challenged Team Nigeria to deliver outstanding performances at the 2026 World Athletics Relays. The competition is scheduled to take place from May 2nd to 3rd in Gaborone, Botswana. Director General Bukola Olopade addressed the squad before their departure: urging them to maintain high levels of discipline and focus on the global stage. He noted that the event provides a vital opportunity for the country to reassert its dominance in international track events.

Nigeria will participate in all six relay categories after receiving late approval to expand their entry. The initial qualification covered only three disciplines: but the team will now field runners in every event. This full program allows the coaching staff to showcase the nation's depth across different age groups and skill levels. A contingent of 24 athletes left Nigeria on Monday via Ethiopian Airlines: while several foreign-based stars will join the group directly in Gaborone.

The championship serves as a critical qualification pathway for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. It also offers slots for the World Athletics Ultimate Championship: making every heat and final significant for future rankings. Technical Director Gabriel Okon expressed confidence in the squad's preparation and fitness levels. He believes the mix of veteran leaders and rising youth talents will result in successful qualification outcomes.

The Director General also confirmed his intention to travel to Botswana to support the athletes personally. He stated that his presence demonstrates the federal government's dedication to the success of the national sports program. This commitment follows a trend of increased investment in elite training grants and infrastructure across the country. Nigeria faces stiff competition from 40 other nations: including a strong United States team that arrived early in the host city.

The athletes are focused on securing podium finishes to build momentum for the upcoming season. Podium success in Gaborone would significantly boost Nigeria's standing in the world relay rankings.
