NOC President Congratulates Oyedeji on Election as WOA Secretary-General

Posted : 20 January 2026

ABUJA, NIGERIA — President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, has congratulated former international basketball star Olumide Oyedeji on his election as Secretary-General of the World Olympians Association (WOA).

In a statement issued by Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the NOC, Gumel praised Oyedeji’s achievement at the election, which was attended by over 107 delegates from National Olympians Associations (NOAs) worldwide.

Gumel described the WOA as a prestigious body operating under the International Olympic Committee (IOC), noting that it belongs to the same Olympic constituency that recently produced the newly elected IOC President, Kirsty Coventry—the legendary Zimbabwean swimmer and two-time Olympic gold medallist.

According to Gumel, Oyedeji’s elevation to a global leadership role further strengthens Nigeria’s growing influence within the Olympic movement. A former NBA player and captain of Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, Oyedeji has consistently advocated for athlete welfare and development.

He added that Oyedeji’s election comes during a period of African excellence in sports governance, following Coventry’s historic emergence in 2025 as the first female and first African President of the IOC. Gumel also referenced the recent nomination of Nigerian table tennis icon Funke Oshonaike to the IOC Athletes’ Commission by Coventry.

Oyedeji, who currently serves as Third Vice President of the NOC and President of the Nigeria Olympians Association (NOA), secured the WOA Secretary-General position in a landslide victory at a virtual General Assembly held on Sunday.

He won on the first ballot with 55 votes, comfortably defeating Salvador Salguero of El Salvador and Liston Brochette of Puerto Rico, who garnered 32 and 19 votes, respectively.
