American sprint star Noah Lyles will make his long-awaited return to elite competition on Friday when he lines up in the 200m at the Diamond League meet in Monaco. Lyles, the reigning Olympic 100m champion, hasn't raced in either the 100m or 200m this season but previously clocked an impressive 19.46 seconds at this same venue in 2020. He will face off against Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, the Olympic 200m champion, who currently holds the world’s fastest time this season at 19.76 seconds following a strong run in Eugene.
As the countdown to September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo continues, Monaco’s Diamond League meeting—now in its 10th leg of the 15-event series—offers a crucial stage for top athletes. In the women’s 400m hurdles, Dutch sensation Femke Bol aims to extend her remarkable 25-race unbeaten Diamond League streak. Bol, who last raced in Monaco in 2020, will be challenged by Olympic medallists Dalilah Muhammad and Anna Cockrell.
In the men’s pole vault, world record holder Armand "Mondo" Duplantis leads the field, fresh off a 6.00m win in Eugene. After a rare fourth-place finish in Monaco last year, Duplantis will be keen to rebound and possibly take another shot at improving his own world mark of 6.28m, set just weeks ago in Stockholm.
The women’s 100m also promises fireworks, as Olympic champion Julien Alfred seeks redemption after her winning streak was snapped by American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden in Eugene. Alfred, representing Saint Lucia, will battle the Jamaican twins Tia and Tina Clayton and a strong American contingent, aiming to challenge the meeting record of 10.72 seconds set by Marion Jones in 1998.
Finally, the men’s 800m continues to flourish with depth and quality. Kenya’s world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi headlines a star-studded field that includes Olympic silver and bronze medallists Marco Arop and Djamel Sedjati. With David Rudisha’s 2012 world record still standing, the middle-distance showdown could deliver one of the season’s standout performances.
