Noah Lyles and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone lead the nominees for the 2025 World Athletics Track Athlete of the Year.
American sprint stars Noah Lyles and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone headline the list of nominees for World Athletics’ Track Athlete of the Year, as announced by the global governing body on Monday.
Lyles, one of the biggest names in athletics, earned his nomination after capturing a remarkable 200m and 4x100m relay double at the World Championships in Tokyo last month. Despite his dominance, the American sprinter faces tough competition, especially given that he missed out on the final shortlist last year despite winning Olympic gold in the 100m in Paris.
Challenging Lyles for the men’s award are France’s Jimmy Gressier, who shocked the world by winning the 10,000m and claiming bronze in the 5,000m in Tokyo; Rai Benjamin of the USA, the 400m hurdles world champion; Cordell Tinch (USA); and Emmanuel Wanyonyi (Kenya).
In the women’s category, American athletes also dominate. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the reigning queen of the 400m, is joined by compatriot Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who won a sensational treble at the World Championships—claiming gold in the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay.
McLaughlin-Levrone further strengthened her claim to the award by making history in Tokyo, becoming the first woman in 40 years to break the 48-second barrier in the 400m, before also adding 4x400m gold to her tally.
Other nominees in the women’s category include Femke Bol (Netherlands), Beatrice Chebet (Kenya), and Faith Kipyegon (Kenya).
Voting for the awards is currently open across World Athletics’ official social media platforms until October 19, with the two finalists—one male and one female—set to be revealed on November 2.
