The National Institute for Sports (NIS) has secured a partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) aimed at developing sportsmen and women for optimal performance.
In a statement released in Lagos, Ben Ogbemudia, Media Assistant to the Director-General of NIS, Philip Shaibu, disclosed that the partnership agreement was signed in Abuja. He explained that the collaboration was formalised during a courtesy visit by the NIS management, led by Shaibu, to the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Abubakar Audi, at the corps’ headquarters.
During the visit, Shaibu briefed the Commandant General on the progress recorded by the institute since he assumed office, highlighting efforts to revive and reposition the NIS. He noted that his appointment marked a significant shift, as he was directly appointed by the President as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the institute, with a clear mandate to restore it as a centre of excellence.
Shaibu explained that upon assumption of office, he assessed the institute’s facilities in Lagos and Abuja and discovered widespread neglect, dilapidated infrastructure, and a shortage of manpower caused by retirements without replacement. He attributed the challenges to years of neglect by previous administrations but emphasized his commitment to rebuilding the institute for the benefit of coaches and athletes nationwide.
The NIS Director-General also commended NSCDC personnel who were among the 474 graduands of the 2025 Basic Certificate Coaching Course, praising their discipline and performance. He thanked the corps for enrolling its officers in the programme and noted that NSCDC’s dedication to sports development is evident in its growing trophy collection.
In his response, the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr. Abubakar Audi, praised Shaibu’s leadership and efforts to restore the NIS to its former status. He assured the institute of full cooperation, particularly in the training and development of NSCDC coaches and elite athletes.
Dr. Audi emphasized the importance of placing the right individuals in leadership positions, noting that the NIS historically played a vital role in producing coaches, facility managers, and sports administrators across various disciplines. He expressed delight at the renewed focus on revamping the institute.
The NSCDC further assured the NIS of continued support, pledging to regularly send its personnel, especially coaches and athletes, to participate in training programmes at the institute.
The partnership coincides with a recent NIS graduation ceremony where nearly 500 coaches were awarded Basic Coaching Certificates, including five coaches from the NSCDC.
