Nigerian Sprinters Lament Jet Lag as Team Nigeria's Medal Hopes Suffer Early Blow in Oregon

Posted : 06 August 2026

Nigeria's quest for success at the 2026 World Athletics U-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, suffered an early setback as the country's sprinters blamed travel fatigue following disappointing performances on the opening day of competition.

Team Nigeria endured a difficult start after the 4x400m mixed relay team failed to qualify for the final, while the nation's hopes in the individual 100m events also ended at the semifinal stage.

In the men's 100m semifinal, Tejiri Godwin finished sixth in the opening semifinal with a time of 10.34 seconds, missing out on qualification for the final. South Africa's Marko Ferreira won the race in 10.13 seconds, with Kyler Brown taking second in 10.16 seconds.

Chigozie Rosemary Nwankwo also saw her campaign come to an end after placing fifth in the women's 100m semifinal in a time of 11.54 seconds.

Jamaica's Shanoya Douglas won the race in 11.21 seconds, while Mariah Maxwell secured second place in 11.25 seconds to advance.

Following their exits, members of the Nigerian contingent expressed frustration over their travel schedule, revealing that they only arrived in Oregon on the morning of their events. The athletes said the lack of recovery and acclimatisation time significantly affected their performances.

Despite the disappointing opening day, Team Nigeria will be looking to bounce back in the remaining events, including the mixed 100m relay, as well as the men's and women's 200m and 400m races, where the country's medal aspirations remain alive.

The Nigerian team will now hope for improved performances as the championships progress, with several athletes still scheduled to compete in key events. A stronger showing in the remaining races could yet revive the country's medal ambitions in Eugene.
