Nigerian quartermiler Onojuvwevwo sets new world-leading time in Louisiana

Posted : 05 April 2026

Nigeria’s rising quartermiler, Ella Onojuvwevwo, delivered a stunning performance to further cement her growing reputation on the global stage, clocking a world-leading time of 49.59 seconds to win the women’s 400m at the Battle of Bayou in Louisiana, USA.

The remarkable run not only improved her standing as the fastest in the world this season and in the NCAA but also propelled her to No. 10 in collegiate history, No. 7 in African all-time rankings, and No. 3 among Nigerian greats in the event.

Onojuvwevwo’s performance is particularly significant as it marks the fastest time by a Nigerian woman since Falilat Ogunkoya set the national benchmark of 49.52 seconds in 1998.

The Battle of Bayou meet also witnessed impressive outings from other Nigerian athletes. In the women’s 100m event, Rosemary Chukwuma sprinted to victory with a wind-assisted time of 10.81 seconds, the fastest all-conditions mark of her career.

She finished ahead of compatriot Favour Ofili, who posted 10.93 seconds to tie for second place alongside Canada’s Audrey Leduc.

The performances underline Nigeria’s growing strength in sprint events, with its athletes continuing to make significant marks on the international athletics scene.

These exceptional results signal a bright future for Nigerian athletics as the outdoor season gathers momentum. With Onojuvwevwo challenging long-standing national records and the sprinters maintaining elite speed, the nation's prospects for upcoming international championships look increasingly formidable. The collective success in Louisiana serves as a powerful testament to the talent and dedication of Nigerian athletes competing on the world stage.
