Nigeria Targets Medal Surge with Trio of Finals at Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria Athletics will look to boost its medal tally on Friday at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as three of its leading stars headline a busy day of track and field action.

The country's biggest medal hopes rest on Africa's premier javelin thrower, Chinecherem Nnamdi, 400m hurdles specialist Ezekiel Nathaniel, and sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike, who will all compete in their respective finals during the evening session.

Nnamdi opens Nigeria's medal chase in the men's javelin final at 8:15 p.m., carrying a season's best throw of 84.68m and hoping to convert his continental dominance into a Commonwealth Games podium finish.

Nathaniel will then line up in the men's 400m hurdles final at 9:00 p.m. The 23-year-old enters the race in impressive form after posting a season's best of 47.37 seconds and is widely regarded as one of Nigeria's strongest medal prospects.

Onwuzurike will conclude the day's athletics programme for Team Nigeria in the men's 200m final at 9:25 p.m. Running from lane eight, the sprinter will be aiming to build on the momentum from his semi-final performance, where he clocked 20.22 seconds to qualify for the medal race.

Earlier in the day, Ruth Usoro will seek a place in the women's long jump final when she competes in the qualification round in Group B at 11:55 a.m.

Nigeria's mixed 4x400m relay team will also begin its campaign in the opening round at 11:35 a.m., with qualification for the final on the line. The team must finish among the top four in Heat One, which features Australia, Zambia, Jamaica, Sierra Leone, Lesotho, and Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Jami Schlueter will continue his demanding decathlon campaign with five events scheduled for the day. His programme includes the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the concluding 1500m race.

Schlueter occupies fourth place overall with 4,196 points at the halfway stage of the competition and remains within striking distance of the medal positions.

Having already secured one gold and three bronze medals in athletics, Team Nigeria will be hoping Friday's schedule delivers another strong return and further strengthens its impressive campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

A successful outing across the day's finals and qualifying events would further underline Team Nigeria's growing strength in athletics and enhance its chances of finishing the Games with an even more impressive medal haul.
