Nigeria has intensified efforts to secure the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with a high-powered delegation arriving in London for the final phase of the bid presentation.
The team is led by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), and Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC. The delegation is expected to make a compelling case for Nigeria’s historic bid, which, if successful, would mark the first time the Commonwealth Games are hosted on African soil.
Dikko had delivered Nigeria’s initial presentation last month, laying the groundwork for this decisive round of engagements.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s full support for the bid, emphasizing Nigeria’s readiness to deliver a world-class Games. Last week, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila welcomed the Commonwealth Games Bid Evaluation team during their visit to Nigeria, further underlining the administration’s commitment.
The delegation to London includes Sunday Dare, Special Assistant on Public Communication and Presidential Spokesperson; Bid Coordinator Mallam Mainasara Ilo; Nigerian Olympic Committee President Engr. Habu Gumel; Minister of Arts and Culture Hannatu Musawa; five-time Olympian and double Commonwealth Games gold medalist Mary Onyali; and current para-badminton world number one Eniola Bolaji.
Nigeria’s bid is anchored on principles of inclusivity, legacy, and development, promising a centenary edition that celebrates the spirit of the Commonwealth while creating long-lasting opportunities for sport, culture, and youth across Africa.
