With just 35 days remaining, Nigeria is intensifying preparations to host the 3rd edition of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Junior Athletics Championship. The competition, set for July 16–20, 2025, will be held at the recently renovated MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
This biennial championship will bring together over 500 Under-18 and Under-20 athletes from more than 50 African nations, making it one of the continent’s most significant youth athletic events. South Africa, the defending overall champions, will face stiff competition as host nation Nigeria aims to shine in front of a home crowd.
“This is not just a competition; it’s a celebration of Africa’s future in track and field,” said Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission. He emphasized Nigeria’s pride in hosting the championship and showcasing its capacity to organize world-class sporting events.
Abeokuta—also known as the Gateway City—was selected for its rising profile in sports development and its modern facilities. Its central location and recent experience hosting the 22nd National Sports Festival position it as an ideal venue for this major continental gathering.
Widely seen as a launchpad for Africa’s future Olympic and world champions, the African Junior Championships hold immense importance. As the countdown continues, expectations are high for Nigeria to deliver an unforgettable event and reaffirm its role as a continental leader in athletics.
