Nigeria Secures Hosting Rights for Maiden Africa Running Conference in Lagos

Posted : 22 October 2025
Nigeria has been selected to host the inaugural Africa Running Conference in Lagos, an event aimed at promoting health, athletic excellence.

Nigeria has secured the rights to host the first-ever Africa Running Conference, which will take place in Lagos. The announcement was made by the National Sports Commission (NSC) in collaboration with World Athletics, with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) receiving the official nod.

The landmark event seeks to encourage road running, talent discovery, and private sector involvement, while raising Nigeria’s profile in the international sports ecosystem.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko emphasized that the conference aligns with the Commission’s long-term goals and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of using sports as a driver of national economic development.

“This conference is about passion, potential, and progress. It will attract sponsorship, showcase our culture, and promote Nigeria’s positive image globally,” Dikko stated, highlighting the role of road running in wellness, education, and competition.

NSC Director General Bukola Olopade welcomed the global sports community, calling the event a milestone in transforming Nigeria from a consumption-driven to a production-driven sports nation.

Alessio Punzi, Head of Running and Mass Participation at World Athletics, reiterated the organization’s support, describing the conference as “many years in the making” and crucial for building a sustainable running culture across Africa.

The two-day event will feature technical workshops for national athletics federations, focusing on standardization, certification, and officiating.

The Africa Running Conference is designed not only as a sporting event but as a strategic initiative to strengthen the synergy between sport, health, education, and economic development in Nigeria, signaling the country’s growing leadership role in continental athletics.
