Nigeria Secures First Medal at CAA U18/U20 Championships Through High Jumper Ikweki

Posted : 17 July 2025

Nigeria's Praise Ikweki has secured the nation’s first medal at the ongoing Confederation of African Athletes (CAA) U18/U20 Championships in Abeokuta, earning a bronze in the high jump event.

The championship witnessed a series of competitive events including finals in the high jump, triple jump, 1500m, and the 100m heats across both male and female categories.

Ikweki, competing alongside teammate Melvin Ododo, began his attempts at 1.80m and maintained a flawless performance until a stumble at 2.03m. He advanced to the next height after successfully clearing 2.03m on his third attempt. However, he missed all three attempts at 2.06m after repeatedly hitting the bar, opening the door for South Africa’s Mateo Le Roux to claim gold.

In the U18 Boys 100m Heat One, Nigeria’s Igbigbidje James Clifford clocked 11.44 seconds, trailing South Africa’s Mukona Manavhela, who ran 11.38 seconds. Both athletes qualified for the semi-finals.

Heat Two saw Nigeria’s Adeola Adeniji finish first with a time of 11.08 seconds, followed closely by Algeria’s Bouhdila Yasser, who ran 11.14 seconds. In Heat Three, South Africa’s Jayen Foure sprinted to a swift 10.65 seconds, ahead of Nigeria’s Egbon Destiny Chinedu, who came in at 10.85 seconds.

In the girls’ U18 100m, Nigeria’s Mariam Jegede dominated Heat One, finishing in 12.13 seconds. Congo’s Boukama Gladys came second with 12.47 seconds, while Ghana’s Darkoah Kwateng settled for third at 12.64 seconds.

Heat Two was led by Miracle Ezechukwu, who ran 11.79 seconds (+0.1 wind) to outpace South Africa’s Oluchi Ndubueze (11.93s) and Cote d’Ivoire’s Andre Marie Joseph (12.26s).

In the U20 women’s 100m heats, Nigeria’s Lucy Nwankwo recorded a new personal best of 11.80 seconds (-0.5) to win her heat. Success Oyibu also claimed victory in Heat One with a time of 11.87 seconds (-1.4).

Speaking after the high jump event, Ikweki expressed mixed emotions. He admitted that bronze was not his goal and that he felt intense pressure to win. Nevertheless, he stated that the experience gained at the championship would fuel his determination to achieve gold in future local and international competitions.
